Infor Tech 10/11/12 March 12, 2018 FROGGER

LET'S MAKE A VIDEO GAME

In this unit, we'll cover:
We'll be building our own Frogger-style video game.

  • positive & negative numbers
  • X and Y coordinates
  • loops and conditions
  • variables and "broadcasts"
  • object-oriented programming
  • input devices (e.g. keyboard)
  • event sequences
  • ... and more

Getting the Frog Moving

We are going to build our Frogger video game will only accept input from the arrow keys on the keyboard.

So, go ahead and change that cat into a frog.
But then what?

We need to build a block that:
    if
          a key is pressed
    then
          change the frog's location

And so, that's exactly what we build.
Make it look like this.

Picture
Now, you have the building blocks,
so change the settings that:
    if
the right arrow key is pressed
    then
move the frog 3 steps to the right
The answer to step one:

Can you figure out the other 3 arrows?

If "move 3 spaces" moves right 3 spacesthen
how can you use a similar block to move left 3 spaces?
Answer:

Now, can you put it all together, so your script can sense and react to all 4 arrow keys:
   up,   down,   left,   and   right.

Creating a moving car

To make a car move, we use the same basic structure as when we wanted the cat to bounce around inside the fence.

However, in this case, we have highway lanes that are perfectly horizontal.  So, to make sure that the cars stay in their lanes, instead of  "moving 10 steps", we're going to just "change x by 10".

Trust me, this will keep everything nice and orderly!

NEAT TRICK:
Rather than making hundreds of cars, we're going to re-use our car so that (for now) only one car travels in each lane.

To do this, we're going to make our car drive across the video game screen, and then "teleport" back to the beginning of the lane.

Watch the above
video to get the idea.

Common Problem

Picture
The second car takes some thinking.
Check out the video below.

Duplicate the Second Car

Object-oriented programming is great because everything is an object.  If you want another, just "duplicate" it.

What did you say?

You tried it, but it's all messed up?

Ah ha!  The dreaded copy-and-paste error rears its ugly head!

Watch this video to see where to make changes

Duplicate the Third Car

Yes, you're completely right.  After showing us how to do the second car, there is absolutely no need to make a video showing how to create a third car.

So go ahead.  It'll be easy....     ...right?

Ummmm.  Teacher!  Why is my car smashing into the wall? ... over and over and over again?

Well, that's not really "bashing".  No, it's more like a "jiggly dance," and the car is doing exactly what you've programmed it to do.

Maybe you should watch this video to discover the simple solutions to fix your problem.

Killing the Frog

Sadly, in a video game called "Frogger", the whole point is to see how long the frog lasts before it dies.

Thankfully, no actual real live frogs were harmed in the making of this game.

But today, you get to learn how to kill those pesky virtual frogs.  You need to start by thinking like the blue car.

Once you can get into the mind of the blue car, everything else is easy.

Frogger Lives Again!

Now that you've killed the frog, it's time to bring the poor guy (or girl) back to life! So, here's a list of all the things that need to happen between the death and re-life of the frog.
In ALL cars:
  • Dead frog message sent (variable)
In the frogger:
  • Dead frog message received (variable)
  • Frog stops moving
  • Frog displays a message (looks = words)
  • Frog makes dying sound
  • Frog goes back to start (try glide!)
  • Frog comes back to life (variable)

Thursday, March 8, 2018 Mental Health and the Law

Mental Health and the Law:

The impact of the law on the lives of people with mental health problems and mental illness is complex. It can affect human rights, indigenous peoples rights, employment opportunities, experiences within the justice system, housing, and even access to healthcare services.
Discussions about mental health and the law, and interactions with the justice system, can be clouded by stigma and misconceptions. Many people wrongly believe that people with a mental health problem or mental illness are typically violent, when in fact they are far more likely to be victims of crime.
There is also an apparent lack of appropriate and sufficient mental health training for police organizations and correctional staff. Canadian police organizations appear to be doing a reasonable job of training officers for successful interactions with people with a mental illness. However, there are still notable gaps and cases where mental illness is overlooked or misrepresented.

It is crucial to understand and improve the ways interactions with the legal and justice systems impact people with mental health problems and illnesses.

The end of the Fur Trade Switching Gears toward Confederation:

A People's History end of an Era.

The Victorian Era PowerPoint

Today, in socials we begin by talking about the Victorian Era (1837-1901). Queen Victoria greatly influenced this period and that her influence extended outside of Britain to Canada and the United States.

Today we looked at some photos from the Victorian Era and I explained how the Victorians were very sure of themselves and put high value on personal modesty and on gravity. The Queen was a model of her era and that the British saw themselves as the center of the known world.
Victorians believed that they should strive to  find the golden mean or golden middle way or is the desirable middle between two extremes, one of excess and the other of deficiency.

We then watched a  film called the Crystal palace (link here). The palace was built to contain an exhibition similar to a modern day EXPO. The exhibition demonstrated the ingenuity and achievement of the British Empire. The film also discussed how imperialism brought great riches to Britain, as well as, increased its power. We will watch the second half of the clip on Tuesday.

Hyper Document on the Printing Press vs. The internet Find Link Here

Today, we discussed as a class
  1. What the printing press and the internet have in common? As a class we decided that they both give access to information and they both speed up communication.
  2. What are the consequences/ results of the printing press and the internet?  The Printing Press meant that literacy increased (people learning how to read) and the newspaper started and so current events were shared among many people.  The Internet has meant quicker access to all kinds of information including: science, politics, current events, medical etc. The technology has allowed everyone open source knowledge.

  3. This great brainstorming can be used in our Adobe Spark projects:

Furthering our discussion from yesterday:

The right to be tried in a reasonable time

In December 2008, Barrett Jordan was arrested and charged with offences relating to possession and trafficking. It was not until February 2013 that he was finally convicted of five drug-related offences. The total delay between the charges and the end of trial was over 49 months. During his trial, Jordan asked to stay the proceedings, which is a request to stop the case from moving forward. He believed that the delay violated his right to be tried within a reasonable time.

The Supreme Court agreed that the delay was too long for a simple drug trial. As a result, the Court created new guidelines to decide whether a delay is reasonable or unreasonable. According to the default guidelines, a case should be tried within 18 months in provincial court and 30 months in superior court. These delays can only be exceeded in exceptional circumstances. While building on previous decisions that had already had a significant impact on the justice system, the majority made it clear they did not think enough had yet been done to eliminate complacency toward delay, recognizing that delay has a negative impact on the accused, victims of crime and society’s interest in seeing justice is done.
R v. Jordan, 2016 SCC 27

  • Reason for delays by the defense:  Psychological evaluations, fact gathering, waiting for results or establishing witnesses etc.
  • When it is a delay by the crown it is only acceptable when there are exceeding circumstances.

March 1, Socials 8 The Renaissance -Printing Press vs. Internet

As promised we will begin with a Kahoot! on the Renaissance (let's see what we remember)

Read page 229 together

Many scholars say the Renaissance began in earnest with the invention of the printing press. The printing press made books available. If you wanted to read them, you had to learn how to read. The new interest in literature began to include art and music. Then came an interest in science and exploration. All over Europe, people became fascinated with new discoveries, new inventions, new works of art and ways of thinking about things. Some of the famous people who lived during the Renaissance include William Shakespeare, Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, Copernicus, Michaelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci!

Should the printing press be considered a more important
turning point in human history than the Internet?
Explain why or why not.
