9-4 January 31, 2018

Today we discussed how events can  change a country. We looked at some of the most thought provoking images that have captured  some of the most powerful moments in Canadian history and we discussed how many of these images evoke different reactions from different viewers. We then worked on a group task. Each of the groups were given four photos to identify and explain their significance to Canadian history and you were asked how these photos represent our nation. Next class you will be asked to speculate what stories were not taken into account. And finally you will present the information next class. Looking forward to hearing your presentations.

Law 12 January 30th, 2018

Homework: You will be expected to read and take notes 12-20 (remember when taking notes -only copy down key concepts, do not write word for word and use abbreviations) BE AWARE - I will be collecting your notes to mark.  This way you can learn how to do it correctly.  I will want you to print of those on Evernote.

Today we will look at the following.

1. Different ways to take notes:

Cornell Note-taking : This system has been around for a long time and is still used today.  It is a form of organizing your notes so that they are easier to review.  This will not be learned in one day and make take some time to get use to.  I have put links to two videos but please feel free to look up others that may go into more in-depth explanations.

 a) Video one: This is a short overview for law students.  He does not give a clear example.

b) Video two: This person explains clearly how to take notes but, her examples are all for biology.

2. The Second way to take notes is Evernote (It is free and to get more features you can pay a monthly fee - I do believe that you can upgrade for free at most universities with a code from your student society/ acceptance information )

a) Watch the very helpful tutorial here

b) Sign up here for free and try it out.

3. There are others and you may want to look at videos of them too.

4. Take some time to copy the keywords and definitions into one of these formats.  Writing them a second time will help  you to memorize.

The Course today:  Take some time and explore these sights.  Get a feel for what you see.  We will be returning to some of the issues presented here.

ACLU and CCLA

The Law and our Province: What issues can arise and how can the process of Law protect individuals/ groups.

1. Article and Video on the Trans Mountain Pipeline : Whose rights are being violated? What are possible courses of action?
2. National Energy Board Court Challenge.
3. Specific Challenge

Response and Discussion

January 30, 2018 9-4

Today we discussed some of the "big ideas" in Socials 10, namely that history is made up of multiple stories and multiple perspectives. We also noted the importance of thinking critically when we study history and view things from all sides. We read the " blind men And the elephant parable" and listened to a Ted talk called, "Africa, not a single story."

I handed out a sheet to help you to synthesize the main ideas and realize their connection to Socials.
