Socials 8 Current Event Unit

This unit is dedicated to newsworthy current events. I am looking for local, national and world events. I am looking for business, finance and politics. This is not the place to discuss the score in the recent Flames game, a football trade or anything to do with a Kardashian or Taylor Swift.

Do not look at this assignment as a major source of stress. Consider it an opportunity to explore a newsworthy topic of interest and to share your interests with your peers. Some interesting topics include:

The trade war Canada vs. United States (tariffs)
The impact of falling oil prices on Alberta's economy
The sale of Trans Mountain Pipeline
The future of space tourism
The Crimean Crisis
Canadians joining the fight against ISIS in Syria and Iraq
Gun laws in the United States
The release of the iPhone X (10)

Overview: Explain the event that occurred.

Background: Why is the context of the event? Why did the event occur?

Significance: Why does this event matter?

Impact on the Future: How is this event going to impact the future?

Some great sources:

When we have finished, I will give you class time to prepare your mini presentations on your explorer and finish work on your explorer projects. Next class we will watch you mini presentations. You may go into the courtyard to prepare your presentations - only those students who have completed their work may go out into the courtyard.  The rest will have to use their time to finish off their unfinished work.

Today in Socials 8 we are going to discuss the Historical Thinking Concepts and focus mainly on Understanding the Ethical dimension of History and Taking Historical Perspective.  We will do this by discussing the influences and thinking of the early European navigators and explorers. We will then try other perspectives on for size.

We will do this by brainstorming ideas in groups and then sharing those ideas.

Wrapping our heads around Exploration Thursday and Friday class:

 Riches of Asia:

Life at Sea 500 Years ago

My fellow shipmate explained to me that life at sea was dangerous!

Create a blog about your life at sea. Despite the dangers explorers still ventured to reach their destination. (explain here what you learned and make some conclusions of why they still went knowing the dangers of Life at Sea)  Be sure to tell me who your partner was in this activity.

April 26, 2018 Social Studies 8 Explorations

What is due?

You should have completed and handed in your Martin Luther Comic strip and Henry VIII project _________________________________________________________________________________

The Ocean Floor?

In Digital Age, What’s Left For Modern Explorers?

Why were explorers determined to venture into dangerous, unknown waters?
Material gain was a powerful motivating factor for Renaissance explorers.  They hoped to get wealth for themselves and their country by finding trade routes and gold.

a)  Using an organizer (chart, bubble chart…), work with a partner to generate a list of five historical or contemporary people you know of who have taken on great challenges. You can select from any field and any time period, and the person does not have to be famous.  Beside each one write down the achievement you admire and one characteristic you think might have motivated that person to take action.

b)  Choose the motivating factor on the list that is most admirable according to your worldview. What is it?
