What do you think the theme of this story is?
Theme vs. Subject (the subject is a fact not an opinion while the theme is an opinion rather than a fact)
Theme: Life lesson, meaning, moral or message about life or human nature that is communicated by a literary work.
In other words...
Theme is what the story teaches readers.
Theme is not a word, it is a sentence.
You do not have to agree with the theme to identify it.

Here is a good video on theme
The topics covered include, What is it, How a subject differs from a theme, and How to find a Theme.
I will stop at different points during the power point video and ask
you to take notes. For example, "Theme: the central idea of a work of
literature." and "A Theme is the idea the writer expresses on the
subject of the story." Please use these notes for when you are looking
for Theme in our next short story.
We will read some sample short stories and searched for the theme in pairs.
