February 5, Law 12

This week no Quiz. Question from pages 34-35 due Tuesday.  Presentations of 9 Today and Tomorrow.

Today we will be looking at the Rule of Law:

Rule of Law: (page 19)
  •  The Magna Carta of 1215
  •  "No one is above the Law"
  •  The fundamental principle that the law applies equally to all persons.
  • All rulers must obey the law
  • No ruler could restrict the freedom of the people without reason 
Habeas Corpus:
  • The Magna Carta also guaranteed this
  • A document that requires a person to be brought to court to determine if he or she is being legally detained.
  • No throwing someone in jail and forgetting about them
Omar Kahr:
  • Who was he and how does his story come in conflict with the rule of law.

Activity: How would you explain the rule of law to a fellow student who has never heard the term before? You might discuss why the rule of law is important, and how it impacts our daily lives. You might also discuss any current events involving threats to the rule of law. ie. Bill C-51
